In India, the Super Blue Moon coincides with Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi Purnima, adding special significance to this year’s celebration.
A Super Blue Moon occurs when a full moon, or the third full moon in a season, is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. The term was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979.
Despite its name, a Super Blue Moon will not actually appear blue. However, there have been rare instances where the moon has looked blue due to significant amounts of smoke or dust in the atmosphere.
A supermoon appears up to 30% brighter and 14% larger than a regular full moon. During this Super Blue Moon, 98% of the moon’s near side will be illuminated by the Sun on Sunday, with the illumination increasing to 99% and then 100% over the following days. At its peak, the supermoon will be approximately 225,288 miles from Earth.
